No, vaccinating teachers doesn't mean it's time to open schools

Vaccinating teachers doesn’t mean schools should reopen, though this seems to be a popular opinion amongst those tired of having their offspring at home with them all hours of the day, as they themselves deal with the newfound challenge(s) of a work-from-home lifestyle.

Let's remember the reason schools were closed in the first place: because classroom structures spread disease efficiently. You send your child to school, they get sick from whoever is sick in the class, and then your child kindly brings it home to you.

Vaccinating teachers primarily protects teachers, not the families of students. In most public schools, there is a 30:1 ratio of students to teachers. For each of the 30 students, there is at least one parent; and likely a second, along with other family members.

Opening schools is therefore likely to rapidly increase the rate of community infection. If we open schools now, what will have been the purpose of the last year of school-from-home? Not much at all, I imagine.
